1998's racing schedule

Date Race Comments
Sunday Feb. 8 HYC Opening Day Invit. 3rd place.  2 races. Wind 15-20 kts for the first race but died down to 5-10 for the second race. 1 1/2 minutes late to the second start. Flew the new jib in the second race and it proved to be very fast. We should be fast whenever we get to fly it in the future.
Sunday Feb. 22 HYC Kokohead Race postponed
Sunday March 8 WYC Spring Offshore 1st place. 2 races. Wind 3-8 kts. Saw a huge pod of dolphin just before the race. Forced over early in first race but struggled back up to second. In the second race we sailed better than ever and crossed in first. Awesome race!
Saturday March 21 HYC Pokai Bay 2nd place. Normally a spinnaker run, this time it was all to weather in 20-25 kts. Did good. Almost ran over a pair of humping turtles.
Sunday March 22 HYC Pokai Bay Return 2nd place. Wind 20-25 kts. Hung in first for most of the race, but the last half of the race turned into a long reach and we couldn't hold off the ultra light reaching boats. Saw some whales and more humping turtles.
Saturday April 4 PHYC Offshore 6th place.  Wind 30-40 kts.  Started 30 sec. late.  Short 4 people so we couldn't fly the chute.  Lots of fun surfing downwind at 13-14 kts.  Didn't break anything.  Missed 2nd place by 36 sec.
Sunday April 5 PHYC Return 4th place.  Wind 25 kts.  Started 30 sec. late.  Short 4 people so we couldn't fly the chute.   Missed 2nd place by 32 sec.
Saturday  April 25 HYC Hale Olono Race to Hale Olono canceled, alternate destination Kaneohe Bay.  Couldn't race due to work but started to save some points.
Sunday April 26 HYC Hale Olono Return See above.
Sunday May 3 PYC Offshore Invitational 6th place. This normal around the bouys race was changed this year to one big reaching race. Not our kind of race.
Saturday May 23 WYC 3-day Around Oahu Gale force winds cancelled this race on saturday.  Sunday's winds were a bit lighter so they held a race down to Pokai Bay and back.
Sunday May 24 WYC 3-day Around Oahu You may want to know how we did but I don't want to say.  It was not our finest hour.
Monday May 25 WYC 3-day Around Oahu Neither was this day.
Sunday June 7 WYC King Kam 1st place. S.C.A.T. prevailed today. It stands for Superior Crew-work and Advanced Tactics.  We kicked butt! After the 3-day race we were fired up today. All the boats in todays race rated faster than us and in the second race of the day we even beat everyone boat for boat!!  Awesome!
Sunday June 28 HYC Wahine Invitational 1st place. The fairer sex took charge today and didn't miss a beat.  Nailed the start both races, and had superior boatspeed on all points.  Mindy drove the first race and we won by over 5 minutes.  Annica drove the second race and we won by over 5 minutes again.  I think I might be out of a job.
Friday July 3 Dillingham Race 3rd place. We haven't been doing very well in the longer races so went into this one with the attitude of staying focused the whole time.  By the way this race was from Honolulu to Kaneohe bay.  We started out slow ... took awhile to get the sail selection and shape right.  Once we we're hooked up though we began reeling 'em in and were able to get back up to third by the finish.  Felt a bit beat up at the end though.
Saturday July 4 KYC Orf. 8-Invitational 2nd place. This was a 14 mile bouy race off of Kaneohe.  It was also a championship race so it was very important to us.  Great start and we headed right up the middle of the course tacking on the headers and playing it by the book. At our first crossing with the other boats, we were ahead.  Everyone went way right on the course and when we crossed again they were ahead.  OK ..... Now they tell us the right is favored.
At any rate we kept the mistakes to a minimum and beat everyone except Bottle Rocket.
Sunday July 5 Kanewai Race 3rd place.  Podium finish every day this weekend.  We are stoked!
This is a race from Kaneohe Bay back to Honolulu.  Short beat to clear the Bay and then a long reach down to Makapuu lighthouse.  Stinger doesn't reach very well at all, so during that part of the race everyone walked away from us.  Once we got to Makapuu and the chute went up we put the pedal to the metal.  The wind was gusting to 30 knots and the waves were pretty good size so we were surfing.  Up till today, I've never pushed Stinger so hard.  The rigging was singing, the mast was bending forward, and the seams in the chute were stretching... and we were FLYING!  Have never surfed so fast and so long before. We peaked at about 14 knots! And the wildest thing was that we were staying in the wave for what seemed like forever.  The bow was inches from burying into the wave in front and spray was shooting off both sides three feet above the deck!  Saw a couple of other boats do some really knarly crashes.  We didn't break anything, nobody got hurt, and we never crashed. AWESOME DAY!!!
